Carl grew up in Walled Lake, Michigan, helping his father repair small engines for their neighbors. Carl began apprenticing his father at the age of 12 and has developed a deep knowledge and understanding of small engines. He has shared his unique insight and knowledge with his son Steve, and step-son Griffin, who carry on the Yates tradition today.
